Tsunami
Tsunami South East Asia relief efforts
Synopsis
In this lesson, students are required to use a variety of information sources to learn about tsunamis. Activities include mysteries and leaflet writing exercises, with a particular focus on the South East Asia tsunami of 2004. The lesson will debate and prompt geographical enquiry, including an exploration of the work of the Royal Navy, British Army and RAF in consultation with the Department for International Development (DFID) in the tsunami-hit regions. Issues of pre-disaster planning and preparation are also explored.

Learning Outcomes
Lower ability students will:- Have some understanding of tectonic activity and how it relates to tsunami.
- Understand some of the differences in impacts of tectonic activity in less economically developed countries.
- Understand what constitutes humanitarian aid, and why it is necessary.
- Have some understanding of the need for preparation and prevention in relation to natural disasters, with some ideas as to the manner in which they might be implemented.
- Demonstrate a good understanding of tectonic activity and how it relates to tsunami, and are able to cite some examples of case studies.
- Understand most of the differences in impacts of tectonic activity in less economically developed countries and are able to explain the reasons for those differences.
- Have a good understanding of what constitutes humanitarian aid, and why it is necessary.
- Be able to cite examples of preparation and prevention in relation to natural disasters, with some reasoning as to the necessity of these and the manner in which they might be implemented.
- Demonstrate a detailed understanding of tectonic activity and how it relates to tsunami, and are able to cite multiple examples of case studies.
- Understand the full extent of differences in impacts of tectonic activity in less economically developed countries and are able to explain the reasons for those differences.
- Have a detailed understanding of what constitutes humanitarian aid, why it is necessary, and are able to link into the topic of interdependence.
- Be able to cite examples of preparation and prevention in relation to natural disasters, with clear reasoning as to the necessity of these and the manner in which they might be implemented.
