1. Starter: Introduction to recruitment advertising - Duration 5-15 mins

  • This activity introduces the idea of recruitment advertising with an example of a recent Army television recruitment campaign. Students should watch the film clip as a class and record their response on Worksheet 1 before discussing as a class their reaction to the advertisement.

2. Analysing written advertisements in detail - Duration 15-30 mins

  • Students are provided with a copy of a poster / magazine advertisement for the Army on Student Worksheet 2 and a copy of Student Worksheets 3 and 4. Working in pairs or small groups, students should discuss the efficacy of the advertisement and deconstruct it with specific reference to criteria outlined in their worksheets.
  • Explore the various written and visual techniques used to persuade and motivate a target audience.
  • Evaluate how information is presented.
  • Understand how creative executions vary depending on the target audience.

3. Creating a recruitment advertisement - writing to persuade - Duration 30-50 mins

  • Students watch a second television advertisement for RAF recruitment. Using the advertisement as stimulus, students create their own poster or magazine advertisement to support the TV campaign.
  • Utilise written and visual techniques to motivate and appeal to a target audience.
  • Use language to gain attention and sustain interest.
  • Understand how audiences and readers choose and respond to media.
  • Work within a group and assume key role/s.

4. Plenary: Lesson recap - Duration 10-15 mins
