Loci
RAF Mountain Rescue Teams
Synopsis
This interactive role-play lesson invites students to work alone or in pairs as members of the RAF Mountain Rescue Service which is composed of four RAF Mountain Rescue Teams. Applying their knowledge of loci (circular, perpendicular bisector and angle bisector) students are presented with a series of scenarios based on real-life incidents and are asked to identify search paths and likely sites via reasoning and ICT. Overlaying additional criteria (such as terrain or poor weather) develops an understanding of the practicalities of such mathematical approaches whilst use of different scale maps highlights the need for accuracy. Case histories extend to both civilian and military search and rescue operations. Scene-setting images help set the scene and bring this important work to life.
