Non-metals (carbon)
Protection of off-shore oil-rigs
Synopsis
This lesson introduces students to the carbon cycle, the extraction of hydrocarbons by fractional distillation and the by-products of burning hydrocarbons. Students revise their knowledge of elements, exploring the make-up of familiar materials.
However this lesson focuses most fully on the value of oil and current international reliance on combustible fuels. Considering the oil extraction and transportation process it considers the role of oil-producing countries and the economic dependence on a stable supply. Measures for the protection of this supply (both economic and practical) are considered as are steps taken by countries to research and develop alternative fuels.
A 'vision for the future' is drawn up, with students creating alternative economies and powers. A short-term appreciation of the importance of conserving fuels is gained and the role of the MOD in protecting existing resources debated.
