Ethnic diversity
Ethnic diversity in the Armed Forces
Synopsis
This lesson highlights the ethnically diverse nature of British society with a particular emphasis on the Black and Asian communities. Students are invited to consider the significant, but often unrecognised contributions of various ethnic groups to the development of the nation, with specific focus on the involvement of ethnic minorities in the Armed Forces. It covers the history of ethnic minorities in the Armed Forces, including the issues associated to the general lack of recognition of their contribution. It also builds on students' understanding of racial equality practices in employment by learning about the Ministry of Defences (MOD) current Partnership Agreement with the Commission for Racial Equality (CRE). From September 2007 the CRE has been integrated into the new Commission for Equality and Human Rights (CEHR).
'We Were There' is an MOD exhibition on this topic. To order free colour books featuring content from the exhibition, email: enquiries@defencedynamics.mod.uk. Alternatively, visit the website: http://www.wewerethere.defencedynamics.mod.uk/
