Role of the Royal Navy in suppressing the Slave Trade
Synopsis
This lesson focuses on the role played by the Royal Navy in suppressing the Slave Trade following the British Slavery Abolition Act of 1807. It is advised that this lesson is delivered following the lesson on the 'Abolition of slavery' which looks more closely at the origins of the trade, the treatment of slaves and the Slave Trade triangle.

Learning Outcomes
Lower ability students will:- Have a basic understanding of the anti-slavery movement.
- Recognise that tactics were used by campaigners to mobilise public opinion.
- Recognise the role of the Royal Navy in abolishing the Slave Trade.
- Have a basic understanding of the conditions faced by personnel in the Royal Navy West Africa Squadron and empathise with them.
- Have a basic understanding of the fact that the Royal Navy are still heavily involved in the suppression of slavery today.
- Recognise what the anti-slavery movement was and identify key individuals involved.
- Recognise and evaluate some of the tactics used by campaigners to mobilise opinion.
- Recognise the role of the Royal Navy in abolishing the Slave Trade and the difficulties they faced.
- Understand the conditions faced by personnel in the Royal Navy West Africa Squadron
- Understand that the Royal Navy are still heavily involved in the suppression of slavery today.
- Understand what the anti-slavery movement was and be able to identify key individuals involved in it and how it operated.
