Conflict and cooperation

The Bosnian War (1992-1995)

Synopsis

This lesson encourages students to consider the characteristics and consequences of conflict in their own lives and their understanding and opinions are then applied to international conflicts. After identifying that the UK has been involved in several disputes between other nations, the students then review the UK's involvement in the Balkans crisis with a particular focus on the Bosnia War (1992-1995). Students identify the characteristics and consequences of the Bosnian war and learn about the UN, EU, NATO and UK Armed Forces role in helping to resolve the conflict. They then complete a mediation exercise, role-playing different Bosnian ethnic representatives and a UN mediator to appreciate the complexity of resolving international conflict.

This is an excellent introductory lesson for the Human Rights Lesson Plan which requires students to consider the human rights issues associated to the Bosnian war.
