Breathing and respiration
Use of extreme breathing skills in the Armed Forces
Synopsis
This lesson introduces students to the processes necessary to allow humans to breathe and exchange gases. The lesson is supported by engaging video footage which will help to contextualise these processes and provide students with a deeper understanding of the skills necessary to undertake certain jobs within the Armed Forces.

Learning Outcomes
Lower ability students will:- Understand the role and location of the respiratory system.
- Be aware of the processes that lead to inhalation and exhalation. Understand that the air we breathe in and out has a different composition.
- Understand the importance of oxygen to the body. Understand that gases are exchanged between the lungs and the bloodstream.
- Understand that specific jobs (some within the British Armed Forces) demand effective breathing control.
- Be familiar with the names and functions of the different organs which make up the respiratory system.
- Be familiar with and able to explain, with the help of images, the processes which lead to inhalation and exhalation and the different make up of the air breathed in and out.
- Understand the importance of oxygen to the body. Be familiar with the processes which lead to the exchange of gases between the lungs and the bloodstream.
- Understand the importance of breathing control under different circumstances and the importance to specific jobs within the British Armed Forces.
- Be conversant with the names and functions of the different organs which make up the respiratory system.
- Be able to explain the processes which lead to inhalation and exhalation and the different make up of the air breathed in and the air breathed out.
- Understand the importance of oxygen to the body and be able to explain the processes which lead to the exchange of gases between the lungs and the bloodstream.
- Understand the importance of being able to control your breathing to performing certain jobs within the British Armed Forces.
