Remembrance Day

Passing of the WW1 Generation

Synopsis

This Assembly Plan uses Remembrance Day to encourage students to consider the importance of remembering those members of the British Armed Forces who died whilst fighting in conflicts. Particular attention is paid to the World War One generation as 2009 saw the passing of the remaining UK veterans, marking a significant milestone in our nation's history. Students are asked to consider the importance of remembrance and how we remember a passed generation. The assembly highlights conflicts and events that have taken place since the First World War and encourages students to reflect on the sacrifices that are made to protect our freedom today. The assembly ends by posing some probing questions for students to consider during the two minute silence. The assembly is supported by video clips which help students to reflect on the loss experienced by military personnel's' families and friends.
