The Memorial Gates

In November 2002, Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, opened the Memorial Gates near Buckingham Palace, to commemorate the sacrifices made by the peoples of Africa, Asia and the West Indies. The Ministry of Defence and British Armed Forces were proud to support that occasion by setting up this exhibition at a venue where veterans from ethnic minority groups could meet the Queen.

Words spoken at the event by Baroness Flather, Chairman of the Memorial Gates Committee, reflect the philosophy of the “We Were There” exhibition.

“It is our fervent hope that the volunteers from the Indian sub-Continent, Africa and the Caribbean, whose memorial this constitutes, will find a permanent place in the hearts of the British people. By remembering our shared sacrifice in the darkest days of two world wars we are certain that we can build together a cohesive society based upon mutual respect and understanding”.
