Modern Day Background

The Ministry of Defence (MOD) and the Armed Forces now operate on a global scale in a wide variety of roles such as war fighting, counter-terrorism, defence diplomacy, peace keeping and the delivery of humanitarian aid. Altogether about 290,000 civilian and military personnel are employed.

Men and women from ethnic minorities make up 5.6% of the Armed Forces and 2.9% of the MOD Civil Service. They all contribute to the common aim of defending their country through strengthening international peace and stability and being a force for good in the world. The MOD is keen to reflect the multi-cultural nature of society in the UK today and to draw upon the widest possible pool of diverse talents available. It is committed to recruit greater numbers of men and women from ethnic minority backgrounds into military and civilian professions.
